There is a port on the side, that looks like a USB port, but it is only a service port. The TV does not have the internal software to communicate with or to store information on an external hard drive. Select "Yes, format my hard drive" on the Configure External Hard Drive screen (this may take up to 10 minutes).

Adding a USB drive to an airport extreme is not good because it's not reliable. Tends to disconnect, and then to reconnect you have to reboot the airport and the usb disc. Not worth it. The fact that these are USB Hard drives is really the major constraint here. You can handle the speed issue with more root hubs, either external PCI or express card (and well doing this on a laptop is a horrid idea), or using USB drives and connectors.
