Terra's training led to him rejecting and refusing his darkness and then when he gets the chance to begin to learn to control it his over confidence leads to his down fall as he uses mass unrestrained darkness.

Eventually even giving up trying to take his body back from Xehanort and becoming an evil jerk really sad. Riku didn't have that training Terra did.

Sora didn't have someone trying to restrict him, nay he had everything and everyone who wasn't evil encourage him and guide him. They all tried to help make sora stronger and Sora's heart that was born naturally strong could only get stronger.

Sora's closest thing to a master was Mickey,Donald,and Goofy who all helped sora and encouraged him.

Leadership is Not Personality

Mickey even enlisted Merlin to help train sora in magic. Sora also gotten broken up worse that Ven did and put to sleep but his friends were able to wake him up and Sora was able to continue growing from their unlike Ven who also got cut short.

Also don't forget Terra is almost an adult, the younger you are the most potential you have to grow. I mean look at how Ven's power grows in leaps in bounds just like sora and roxas.
